Ruigoord past in een eeuwenoude traditie van ‘kunstenaarskolonies’ waar kunst en leven worden geïntegreerd tot een gemeenschappelijk experiment. Ruigoord is een idealistisch en idyllisch oord waar kunstenaars aan hun eigen oeuvre werken. Het is echter de nadruk op gezamenlijke projecten die er het karakter van eigentijdse kunstenaarskolonie aan geeft. Op eigenzinnige wijze wordt vorm gegeven aan onderlinge betrokkenheid en wordt voldaan aan de behoefte aan uitwisseling, aan gemeenschappelijke ervaringen, expressie en extase! Een menselijke oerbehoefte die zich sterker manifesteert naarmate het tijdsgewricht egocentrischer en materialistischer lijkt. De groene oase waarin Ruigoord is gelegen beantwoordt aan de behoefte van kunstenaars om zich voor langere of kortere duur te kunnen terugtrekken uit een verstedelijkte en geindustrialiseerde omgeving, zoals dat altijd al een bestaansreden voor kunstenaarskolonies was.
Bij Ruigoordse ‘Gesamtkunstwerken’ als theaterproducties, festivals of het bouwen van een Toren van Babel, vervaagt het onderscheid tussen bedenkers en uitvoerders en bepaalt het resultaat van de collectieve creatieve manifestatie het kunstenaarschap van de groep.
